Annually, Devon challenges his audience by doing the greater good for the Homeless people of Cape Town.
April 2016, he got 2 friends on board and gave birth to the #WeDidIt Winter Campaign where he vowed to sleep on a rooftop for 3 cold nights and in addition, he further challenged his audience to come out of their comfy homes and donate warm winter items to the homeless. During the 3 days, the aim was to reach 5000 items of clothing but by the 1st night over 7000 pieces were received.
The campaign reached many media outlets, from Online News sites such as News24, EWN, to radio stations Kfm 94.5, GOODHOPE FM & Heart 104.9 FM and daytime television such as Hectic 9 nine | SABC2 and Ek se | Cape Town tv
Corporates such as Shoprite saw the challenge and made contact to get on board immediately, their support and donations were overwhelming. They supplied donuts and coffee as a Thank you gesture and covered all costs pertaining to the event. They also setup drop-off points in various stores across Cape Town for those wanting to donate to the worthy cause.
Another Corporate who heard about what we were doing was The Foschini Group, they donated 5000 blankets.
At the end of the 3 days, we managed to raise over 15 280 Warm Winter items for the Homeless across the City of Cape Town
Weeks after the event, we opened it up to anyone on social media to come out and help distribute blankets, jackets, pants, shirts, hoodies, beanies, gloves & shoes to the man on the street! We also went to Night Shelters like Elim Night Shelter & The Haven Shelter. See photos below!
Side note: It was amazing to see over 30 people across all racial and religious backgrounds come together and do something for people they dont know, the Homeless.
The Ubuntu spirit was alive and up till today, this is one of Devon’s highlights in his life!
Thank you to everyone involved.
